Abyss - 2022
Abyss was a project created in California in December 2022. Originally released as an Instagram post, the series explores feelings of loneliness and unease with the prospect of endless change and crossroads in one's life. Dense fog in many of the photographs, rendered as digital black-and-white images, shrouds otherwise colorful and attractive shots of the beach city of Oceanside. Figures are depicted as removed, pensive, or are absent altogether. Abstracted landscapes tie a loose sense of place to the scene.
The feeling the images evoke are ones that I have associated with the promise of new experiences. The unease and fear mix with a dark curiosity, something I felt while standing on the beach in Oceanside at night. At the time, these experiences could only be processed through my photography, and the weather was kind enough to provide a beautiful catalyst for my work.
Now, I can revisit that time and better reflect on what it meant to me, and what I was trying to express by making these images. That is why I'm re-releasing this project, as well as adding some images I left out of the original post. I am also selling prints of these images, so please contact me if you are interested.
